ERCP in Salt Lake

Overview

ERCP is a specialised medical procedure that helps doctors examine and treat problems in your bile and pancreatic ducts. These ducts are pathways that carry digestive fluids from the liver and pancreas to the small intestine. Using a flexible tube with a camera and X-rays, doctors can spot and fix issues that might be causing you pain or discomfort.

Before the procedure:

  • Light meals only 8 hours before
  • Stop certain medicines as advised
  • Bring someone to take you home
Z

During the procedure:

  • You will receive a sedative to help you relax.
  • A flexible tube, called a catheter, is gently inserted via the endoscope through your mouth, passing through the stomach to reach the small intestine.
  • A special dye is introduced into the bile and pancreatic ducts. This makes them visible on X-ray images.
  • If blockages or other issues are found, the doctor can address them during the procedure. This may involve removing gallstones or placing small tubes (stents) to keep ducts open.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ERCP painful?

You will be sedated during ERCP, so you will not feel any pain. However, you may feel some discomfort after the process.

Can I eat normally after ERCP?

Start with clear liquids, then move to a regular diet as advised by your doctor, usually within 24 hours.

Are there alternatives to ERCP?

Non-invasive tests like MRCP or endoscopic ultrasound can diagnose duct issues, but ERCP is the standard procedure for certain treatments, which allows for both diagnosis and treatment.

When will I get the results?

You will get ERCP results within a few days. Contact our front desk once the test is done.

How long does the ERCP procedure take?

The procedure usually lasts for 30 minutes to an hour as an outpatient process. You may have to stay 1-2 hours in our recovery room for close monitoring after the ERCP test.
